STATEMENT FROM PM WHILST IN US- MEANWHILE ACCUSATIONS OF SECRECY OVER SCOTT BAKER REVIEW

David Cameron is in the US rubbing shoulders with President Obama whilst further cementing the "Special Relationship". Meanwhile from back home the message from the British Public appears to be getting to the PM who has according to media reports indicated that he intends further review of the existing extradition treaty to takes place. How many reviews are needed I do not know. Melanie Riley from Friends Extradited made this statement in response to David Cameron's proposed  intent.

“Cameron’s words are laudable. However the real problem is overturning the stubborn intransigence of his Home Office mandarins. We don’t need reviews and guidelines – everyone who knows anything about the issue knows that the problems are readily resolved by two small measures. First by introducing a new forum amendment, not the one currently on statute but the one the Tories originally proposed in 2006, to ensure that where defendants can more fairly be tried in Britain, a requesting country should have to convince a British court that there is a better case for extradition, before hauling British citizens off elsewhere for trial.  This forum bar wouldn’t just apply to America, but all countries, and does not mean that the principle of extradition is dead, just fair.

“The second issue is simply to  bring reciprocity to the US/UK treaty – both countries should need to show similar levels of evidence when seeking to extradite – then no one can quibble about unfairness.

“Campaigners won the intellectual arguments years ago – now it’s time for Cameron’s government to stop prevaricating and step up to the plate.”

LEGAL EXPERTS RESPONSE

PUBLIC REACTION TO RICHARD'S EXTRADITION ORDER

Recent Petition Comments

Leaving aside the debate over the legality of TVShack, it is clear that Richard has committed no offence in the UK and that the alleged offences did not take place on US soil. This is such an obvious abuse of the extradition process and it sets a very dangerous precedent; that US law is now the de facto international law. This is wrong and it is for this reason that I oppose Richard's extradition.

A fair trial in the country of the alleged offense is a must. Why extradite to a completely unrelated country?? The U.S shouldnt be allowed to bully people like this......

He should be tried under UK law as he is a UK citizen. The US should move to make laws to block sites like this if they don't want their citizens seeing this stuff. It is all a legal grey area anyway, I find this stuff through google so why aren't they being shut down? Irrespective he needs to be able to defend himself in his own country and the UK should protect that right.

US soldier "Sergeant X" flown out of Afghanistan to face a pre-trial hearing. Shame he won't be tried in country of offence!

It's actually sickening to think we are living under US law, how blind was Blair to let this happen..

ORDER FOR RICHARD'S EXTRADITION -12th March 2012 by Fax

Approximately less than 5 hours before deadline our solicitor received a fax of the Home Secretary Theresa May's order for Richard's extradition see below. You will see that in order for Richard to be shipped off to the US just 4 lines of text and a rubber stamp is all that is required. The actual delivered letter arrived  7 hours after the deadline had passed. Of interest is that this is the very first and only piece of communication we have received since this whole extradition nightmare began. I find that a despicable way to treat someone.
